With PM Narendra Modi finally set for release, lead actor Vivek Oberoi could certainly have used some publicity. But the actor seems to have gone several steps ahead and stirred a hornet's nest with his latest social media activity, sharing a meme that also features Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
Vivek Oberoi shared a meme poking fun at the frenzy generated by exit polls on the final day of the seven-phase general election to the 17th Lok Sabha. All very well, except that the meme revolves around his one-time relationship with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
Oberoi briefly dated Aishwarya Rai, immediately after she broke up with beau Salman Khan. The resultant fracas with Khan led to Oberoi struggling to find his footing in the film industry.
The actor eventually did ask for Khan's forgiveness. While Khan has not responded on the issue ever, Oberoi did resuscitate the feud when he asked Khan 'if he believes in forgiveness' earlier in April, during an interview with the cine website Bollywoodhungama.com.
As for the meme, it resulted in criticism of the actor for dragging a married woman and her child back into the spotlight. Outspoken badminton star Jwala Gutta was among the many who criticized the tweet.
Extremely absurd of you to tweet this!! Disappointing!— Gutta Jwala (@Guttajwala) May 20, 2019
Maharashtra politician Jitendra Awhad also slammed Oberoi for the tweet. Awhad went further to tag Amitabh Bachchan in his response.
How cheap a person can b ... @vivekoberoi thinks after his film on #Modi he is reincarnation of #Modi— Dr.Jitendra Awhad (@Awhadspeaks) May 20, 2019
Look at the level of disrespect for women @SalmanKhanHolic don't u think he has crossed limits @SrBachchan it's disrespect to any women
Journalist and television personality Nidhi Razdan was also among the many who found the tweet distasteful.
While Oberoi did not create the meme himself, sharing it led to the meme reaching more people than it otherwise would have.
The actor's biopic of incumbent prime minister Narendra Modi, directed by Omung Kumar B, is scheduled for release on 24 May.
