A ticking clock, the sounds of breathing when jogging and a thumping heart. Ashwin Saravanan’s upcoming Game Over (2019) shows us brief glimpses into young professional Taapsee Pannu’s life.
The nearly minute-long teaser has Pannu working from home most of the time, and increasingly becoming aware that she is being watched, and worse, hunted, by someone or something.
The teaser hints at the growing menace and its connection to video games. After all, the film’s title is Game Over!
Pannu’s character, a gamer, seems to be a comics and films fan. Her home office contains figurines from Wonder Woman and Tom and Jerry. She is also a not-so-hidden Mario Bros fan, with a poster and plush figure in her house, and a Red Dead Redemption 2 poster too.
But the biggest connection in the film is with the Pac-Man video game, which she plays often and is somehow linked to her fate. At the end of the trailer, the video game console lies ominously in flames. We see her character growing incapacitated, confined to a wheelchair with broken legs, and pursued by a dark menace.
Ashwin Saravanan, who previously directed Maya (2015), sets up the action well. He highlights Pannu’s character’s growing paranoia and anxiety in a manner that has us worrying for her safety. The director has also co-written the screenplay with Kaavya Ramkumar.
The thriller is due to be released on 14 June in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Watch the teaser below and let us know if you are looking forward to it.
