China box office: Sridevi’s Mom (2017) opens with Rs9.8 crore


The actress’s last film was released in China on Mother’s Day weekend.

Sridevi’s final film, Mom (2017), had a good opening day in China, grossing $1.40 million or 9.6 million yuan (around Rs9.8 crore). According to figures shared by BoxOfficeIndia.com, it makes the Ravi Udyawar film the ninth highest opener from India in China.

The film, which also stars Akshaye Khanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, sits in fourth position at the Chinese box office, behind Hollywood films Detective Pikachu and Avengers: Endgame and the Lebanese drama Capernaum.

It was released on 38,500 screens. Zee Studios International is presenting the film in the country and it is the 41st market the film is being shown in.

Sridevi's husband Boney Kapoor, who has also produced the film, said in a statement, "Mom is very close to our heart and we are overwhelmed to witness the love the film is receiving in China. I want to express my gratitude to Zee Studios International to take the film to a wider audience and to a whole new level. At such an occasion, I wish Sri were here to see the huge success her film has garnered."

The previous Hindi film released in China, Andhadhun (2018), directed by Sriram Raghavan, has earned over Rs300 crore since it was released on 3 April.

More Indian films are eyeing the coveted China release. Majid Majidi’s first film in India, Beyond The Clouds (2018), is due to be in China on 24 May, while the Hrithik Roshan-starrer Kaabil (2017) will arrive on 5 June.
