Parineeti Chopra plays the character of Akshay Kumar’s dead wife in Anurag Singh’s Kesari. The actress said that as she is from north India, she knew about the film’s story of the war between 21 Sikh soldiers and 10,000 Afghan soldiers. The film is based on the 1897 Battle of Saragarhi.

But she was astounded to know the story in detail while working on the film. “I just feel Kesari has come late. This film should have been made long ago because people should have known about this war. But I am glad it is happening now. Today we have the VFX to show you how the war actually must have looked,” she said during an interview.

Last year, digital platform Netflix released a web-series on the same historical event, titled 21 Sarfarosh: Saragarhi 1897. When asked if Kesari will be compared to it, Chopra said, “Firstly, sorry, I don’t know about this film. But I don’t think there will be any problem because it’s a different interpretation or way of showing. It is not like a suspense thriller that once you know the mystery you won’t like watching it again.”

In her short career so far, Chopra has had her share of hits and misses. Her last film Namaste England (2018) bombed at the box office. Directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film was the second in a series after Namastey London (2007).

The actress agreed that she has gone right and wrong in selecting films. "But never did I feel that a particular film will flop before doing it. Every time I felt this will work. But sometimes it goes wrong and sometimes it doesn’t. This is what I have understood now. There are some actors whose films do well always, for some reason. This happened with me too in the first three years,” she said.

Chopra was asked if her criteria for choosing films has changed after some of her films didn’t do well. “My criteria for selecting films hasn’t changed. My understanding of the game has changed,” she said.

Kesari will be released on 21 March.
