Shail Hada marks a return to form with a pleasant and melodic song, 'Zara Suno', for Meezaan Jaaferi and Sharmin Segal's budding romance in Malaal (2019).
The duet, composed by Hada, is sung by Rutvik Talashilkar and Aanandi Joshi. Pleasant and hummable, the song does have its moments, despite the fairly underwhelming visuals and expressions by the newcomers.
The song is centered around the newfound love between the squabbling young neighbours, Shiva and Aastha. In many ways, the visuals to the song feel like a throwback to the 1990s era, with furtive glances in chawl corridors, midnight meetings on the street, and taxi rides overtaking the now familiar mobile texting romances.
While the visuals have a nostalgic feel, the music has a contrasting effect.
Shail Hada's composition picks the right rhythm and melody to establish that sense of romance. The voices of Rutvik Talashilkar and Aanandi Joshi are a definite plus to the composition.
Both vocalists bring a new dimension to the entire composition, with Hada's melody setting the base. Vimal Kashyap's lyrics though feel a little underwhelming, but flow with the music. The use of the rhythmic percussion with the strains of the guitar offer a nice balance.
A Sanjay Leela Bhansali find, Hada offers a melody structure that feels familiar to the filmmaker's Saawariya (2007). Understandable, since both movies were romances with first-time actors.
Though Malaal finds Meezaan Jaaferi and Sharmin Segal a little less equipped in terms of cinematic appeal. While they look natural in terms of the setting of the film, their rawness shows in their expressions on camera.
Malaal, directed by Mangesh Hadawale, is set to release on 5 July.
