Despite all the controversy around it, the pairing of Rajkummar Rao and Kangana Ranaut has ensured a buzz for Mental Hai Kya (2019).

The film, directed by Prakash Kovelamudi, is set to be released in theatres on 26 July. The latest motion poster of the film captures a little more of the enigma that the story involves.

The motion poster has a dapper Rajkummar Rao playing to the image of the classic noir hero with his cigarette alight. It also has Ranaut as the femme fatale, but with a fish in her hand. This seems to be a literal take on the 'fishy' nature of the tale.

The burnt background of the motion poster also adds to the mysterious nature of the story. However, the two are playing quarrelsome neighbours in the film.

According to a statement from the makers, both Ranaut and Rao spy on each other with the actress always being suspicious and trying to intrude in her neighbour’s life, making his hackles rise. Their cynical approach towards each other results in the game of one-upmanship.

Director Prakash Kovelamudi elaborated, "Kangana and Rajkummar are quarrelling neighbours, pitted against each other in the film. Kangana’s character is suspicious of the world around her and she is constantly inquisitive about her neighbour's life.

"Her probing nature provokes Rajkummar and results in them sharing a squabbling chemistry in the film. Their bickering banter unfolds in an interesting way on the big screen and I am excited to showcase them in this light," he continued.

The film has run into several controversies, including a notice from the mental health association regarding the nature of its title. With those put aside, the film is now set to have its trailer released soon.

Mental Hai Kya, written by Kanika Dhillon, is set to be released on 26 July.
