Akshay's character in Vijay Krishna Acharya's Tashan (2008) was also named Bachchan Pandey.

Akshay Kumar played a character with an unusual name called Bachchan Pandey in Yash Raj Films’ Tashan (2008), which was directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya. Now the actor will be starring in a film named on the same character. However, it is not known if Bachchan Pandey is related to Akshay’s character from Tashan.
The film will be directed by Farhad Samji, who previously worked with brother Sajid as the writer-director duo, Sajid-Farhad. Sajid Nadiadwala under his banner Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment will be producing the movie.
The makers have come out with the first poster of the film which is as unusual as the title. It features a lean, muscled and shirtless Akshay wearing a black lungi with a nunchuck in his hand, all ready to attack anyone who comes his way.
Usually, people from north India have the surname Pandey but Akshay’s attire in the film appears to be south Indian, especially the ash on his forehead. The title and attire seem contradictory.
The recently announced film is scheduled to release on Christmas 2020 which means it will clash with Aamir Khan’s Lal Singh Chadha (2020). Akshay and Aamir's films had previously clashed on Christmas over a decade agao when their respective films Welcome (2007) and Taare Zameen Par (2007) released on the holiday. However, both films managed to achieve success at the box office.
