Vishal Bhardwaj will be the headline act for the first day of the fifth edition of the Bollywood Music Project on 20 December.

The music composer and filmmaker will perform in front of a live audience for the first time for the Mumbai music festival.

The festival, spread over two days, will showcase more than 50 artists on the main stage.

“Bollywood music has always been globally recognized and acknowledged on a large scale," said Bhardwaj ahead of the event, using the colloquial term for the Hindi film industry. "In India, music festivals are becoming an important part of the music culture and it’s great to see how Bollywood Music Project has created a community of music lovers that lives and breathes Bollywood.”

The filmmaker has attended previous editions and said, “I have specially curated a playlist based on the songs that have gained a lot of popularity in the past. Besides that, I have included songs that audiences have not heard.”

Bhardwaj is expected to sing songs he has performed on from films like Omkara (2006) and Kaminey (2009). Both films were also directed by him.

Besides Bhardwaj, the festival will host other popular artists like Divya Kumar, Neha Bhasin, DIVINE, B Praak, Akriti Kakar, Prakriti Kakar, Milind Gaba, Lisa Mishra and Meghna Mishra.

The Bollywood Music Project will be held at the Jio Gardens in Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex on 20 and 21 December.
