Released amongst a bevy of film choices, Mardaani 2 (2019), starring Rani Mukerji, has opened with a low number of Rs3.50-3.75 crore nett, according to the figures from BoxOfficeIndia.com. The Gopi Puthran film has only just surpassed the earnings of the original 2014 film which made Rs3.44 crore five years ago.
The cop thriller has a ways to go before it can reach Rs35.83 crore nett, which were the final earnings of the first film. As expected, the film has opened well in West Bengal and Maharashtra and should pick up on the weekend in the multiplexes.
The other Hindi release, The Body (2019), starring Emraan Hashmi and Rishi Kapoor, has managed to earn only Rs50-60 lakhs. It’s hardly surprising as the murder mystery, directed by Jeethu Josephy, had little buzz before its release.
This week’s Hollywood release: Jumaji: The Next Level, starring Dwayne ‘The Rock Johnson and Kevin Hart easily beat the collection of Mardaani 2 on day one. It made Rs1.10 crore nett on paid previews on Thursday and added Rs5-5.25 crore nett on Friday.
Meanwhile, Pati Patni Aur Woh (2019), starring Kartik Aaryan, Bhumi Pednekar, and Ananya Panday, earned Rs2.75-3 crore nett on its second Friday taking its final total to Rs54 crore. The Mudassar Aziz comedy has achieved hit status with its steady numbers heading into second week.
The Ashutosh Gowariker historical Panipat (2019) has been as lucky. The film saw a 85% drop from its first date with Rs60 lakhs nett on its second Friday. The film's eight day total stands at Rs26 crore nett, according to the figures at BoxOfficeIndia.com.
