The digital platform Zee5 brought the revolutionary saga, Hutatma, in the form of a web-series earlier this year. Now, they are all set to narrate another revolutionary tale from Maharashtra in their next series.
The heroic tale of the Chapekar Brothers is well-known in Indian history. So, it doesn’t come as a surprise to see a web-series being made on their life stories. Titled Gondya Aala Re, the series stars Bhushan Pradhan, Kshitish Date, Shivraj Vaichal, Anand Ingle and Sunil Barve, and is directed by Ankur Kakatkar.
Damodar, Balkrishna, and Vasudeo Chapekar, known as Chapekar brothers, are known for shooting down the British civil services officer Walter Charles Rand. Rand was posted in Pune in 1897 to control the situation after a deadly plague epidemic broke out in the city. But the British troops led by him, instead of helping the people, committed grave atrocities, including harassment of women.
The Chapekar brothers and their close friends joined hands to avenge the atrocities committed by Rand. The slogan ‘Gondya Aala Re’ was used as a signal by the revolutionaries to put their plan into action.
The first trailer of Gondya Aala Re indicates that the makers have taken the massy path to narrate the tale, but that is not a bad idea. Good production design, sleek editing, and an exciting background score get you interested. Pradhan, who plays Damodar Chapekar, has undergone a transformation to play a historical character for the first time.
Gondya Aala Re will start streaming on Zee5 on India’s Independence Day, 15 August.
