Bala teaser: Ayushmann Khurrana brings to screen Hindi cinema's first bald hero

Directed by Amar Kaushik, the film is set to release in theatres on 22 November.

Hindi cinema has had heroes of all kinds. Overweight, weak, urban, rural, darker in complexion, and most commonly, fair and fit. But in all cases, the heroes have often been on the better looking side.

In Bala (2019), Ayushmann Khurrana makes an appearance as a young man suffering premature baldness, but still harbouring cinematic dreams.

The teaser for the film certainly captures the USP of the story of Bala. At first sight, we see Khurrana riding a bike down an empty road lip syncing to 'Koi Na Koi Chahiye' sung by Vinod Rathod for Shah Rukh Khan. While the song from Deewana (1992) marked the entry of a superstar into Hindi cinema, Khurrana's portrayal of the song has a slight deviation.

The actor is pictured wearing a cap, that is soon blown away by the wind to reveal a bald pate. Khurrana's joy at the open air ride soon waters down with the next scene of him singing sad lyrics from 'Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai' from Kati Patang (1971), with a morose expression on his face.

The teaser has enough in it to pique the curiousity of Hindi audiences. On a roll of some courageous performances in Andhadhun (2018) and Article 15 (2019), Khurrana seems to have taken it to the next step in his latest films. With Bala, he is set to play the first commercial Hindi cinema hero to go bald on screen.

With the exception of Anupam Kher in Saaransh (1984), there have been few younger or older heroes willing to go bald. In addition to his turn as the cross dresser in Dream Girl, Khurrana has pushed another envelope with Bala. One only hopes that the film turns as interesting as the teaser.

Bala is directed by Amar Kaushik, and is set to release on 22 November.
