Masaan, Newton producer Manish Mundra to make directorial debut with social drama

The film will be based on a real-life incident of a woman battling against corruption.

Manish Mundra is known for producing acclaimed films like Masaan (2015) and Newton (2017) under his banner Drishyam Films. The 2017 movie was also India’s official entry to the Oscars in the foreign film category. Mundra will now make his directorial debut in a social drama about a woman fighting against corruption. The film will be co-directed by Supreet K Singh. 

During a chat with the newspaper supplement Bombay Times, Mundra said that the film will be based on a real story of a woman he has come across. “For some time now, I have been following the story of this Indian woman, and her battle against the corrupt confluence of politics, police and judiciary. It had such an impact on me that I decided to bring this important tale to the world,” he said. 

The yet untitled film will be written by Darab Farooqui, who is known for penning Vishal Bhardwaj’s Dedh Ishqiya (2014), the sequel to the filmmaker’s Ishqiya (2010). The film will go on floors in January 2020 and will be shot in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. 

The film will be the feature film directorial debut for Supreet K Singh as well. She recently made an acclaimed short film Bouddi: The Sister-In-Law, which starred Bidita Baig of Babumoshai Bandookbaaz (2017) fame.
