Veteran actor Sunny Deol has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). An official press conference was held in Delhi to make the formal announcement in the presence of Union defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union railways and coal minister Piyush Goyal.

Deol follows in the footsteps of his father Dharmendra and his stepmother Hema Malini. The Blank (2019) actor heaped praise on prime minister Narendra Modi.

"The way my father supported the party, especially [former prime minister] late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, today I come here to be aligned with Narendra Modi ji," said Deol.

“Modi ji has done a lot for the nation. I want him to remain [in power] for the next years too. Because we want to progress. The youth needs leaders like Modi ji,” he added.

The actor also stated that he was not one to make any tall promises or speeches, but would do whatever it takes to help the people.

However, there is no official word regarding Deol contesting the Lok Sabah elections from the Gurdaspur constituency in Punjab. The Gurdaspur constituency was held by late actor Vinod Khanna till his death in 2017.

Defence minister Sitharaman welcomed Deol into the party and singled out his film Border (1997) as a "nationalistic" film. "The moment we got know that he is coming into the party, I couldn't only relate to the film Border. The feeling of Indian nationalism patriotism when so beautifully evoked through a film can really touch the chord of every Indian citizen...," she said.

Deol's father Dharmendra served as a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) representing Bikaner in Rajasthan from 2004 to 2009, while stepmother Hema Malini is a ruling MP from Mathura.
