'Har Har Gange' song: Arijit Singh's voice carries devotion, determination of Shahid Kapoor's crusader

The setting of Uttarakhand makes it impossible for the makers of Batti Gul Meter Chalu to escape the sights of the impressive Ganges. The latest song from the film depicts the devotion and determination that the river inspires in the people around it. Sung by Arijit Singh and composed by Sachet-Parampara, the song is impactful in its lyrics and composition.
The song's visuals are set at the moment of epiphany for Shahid Kapoor's character, going through a self-transformation after his close friend (Divyendu Sharma) commits suicide. The river Ganga offers him the inspiration to take the tragedy and turn himself over a new leaf. As he introspects over the mistakes, he decides to take on the conglomerate that is the cause of the problem.
As expected, Arijit Singh arrives to lend his voice to the inspirational track. While it is based on the river Ganga, the song is not a completely devotional track. Rather Siddharth-Garima's lyrics focus on turning the river into an inspiration for people seeking to fight injustice. The lyricists use the familiar metaphors of soul-body-illusions to get their message across.
The composition by Sachet-Parampara builds slowly, but does not really take off. While it is pleasant to hear and captures the essence of the moment, it seems to lack a flourish. The slow buildup of the song is effective in making an impact. The use of percussion, and a chorus to raise the frenzy of the famous Ganga aarti is a good attempt.
Batti Gul Meter Chalu is directed by Shree Narayan Singh, and is set to be released on 21 September 2018.
