The festival aims to be a platform to bring South Asian stories to the diaspora in America and also to the non-diaspora audience.

The Bay Area South Asian Films Festival, or BASAFF, is planned as a platform to bring South Asian stories to the American diaspora, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area metropolitan region, home to arguably the largest and most affluent South Asian and Indian communities in the United States, and also to the large, and largely untapped, non-diaspora American audience.

The festival's goal is to leverage the rich cultural diversity of South Asia and help Indian and South Asian films to grow their market in this part of the world.

The inaugural edition of the festival is being held at Mountain View and Palo Alto in the Bay Area on 21-23 September 2018.
