Kajol’s next film Helicopter Eela hits the screens on 12 October. But her 1995 blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) continues to play in Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir theatre for more than 20 years. The film was Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut and also starred Shah Rukh Khan, Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal and Anupam Kher.
During an interview with the media to promote her upcoming film, the actress opined that Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is one film that can never be remade. “It is just not possible to remake the film. Even at that time we didn’t know if the film would turn out to be good. We didn’t know what is going to happen,” she said.
Kajol believes that it is the audience that has made the film a classic. “We haven’t made that film [what it is today]. We surely made and released it. But we didn’t make the phenomena of DDLJ [as it is popularly called]. It is the audience that has appreciated the film so much,” she said, adding, “I don’t think anyone of us can take credit for making it what it is; neither Shah Rukh, Adi [Aditya Chopra], me or even Amrish ji. I also would like to thank Maratha Mandir [the theatre where the film is still screened everyday].”
The actress also spoke about the warm testimonials people have shared with her on how Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge has affected their lives. “I have met people who say that they got married after watching DDLJ and then they made their kids see the film. They say they tell their kids that they have to see the film. The film is like a family heirloom that is passed on to the next generation,” Kajol said.
