The Assam state government has provided director Rima Das with Rs1 crore to help promote her film, VIllage Rockstars (2018), in the Oscar campaign. The film has been nominated as India's official entry to the 2019 Academy Awards in Los Angeles under the Best Foreign Language Film category.

The film won the National Award for Best Feature Film as well as the Special Jury award at the BRICS Film Festival this year. While the cash prize was announced after the film's National Award win, the director had complained about lack of funding to help promote the film before the Oscar ceremony began.

Mumbai Mirror, a tabloid, quoted the director as saying, "We have received Rs1 crore and have started our journey, now let’s see. We are hopeful."

The film has received an overwhelming response from critics and audiences. Das's second film Bulbul Can Sing is currently premiering at the 20th Mumbai Film Festival
