We have seen a number of single elderly males in Hindi cinema with a roving eye. Amitabh Bachchan’s Sam in Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) instantly comes to mind.

Now, a character with similar traits will be seen in Marathi cinema, in Swapna Waghmare Joshi’s Madhuri. A fun-loving, single elderly female played by Sonali Kulkarni eyes good-looking younger boys and men in Madhuri. The film is produced by Urmila Matondkar’s husband Mohsin Akhtar under his banner Mumbapuri Productions.

The teaser of Madhuri gives an idea that the film is a funny and light-hearted affair. The visuals look fresh and the background score adds to its youthful appeal. This might be the most promising trailer of any of Joshi’s films. She has previously directed Fugay (2017) and Savita Damodar Paranjpe (2018) among others.

The story takes place in the hill station Panchgani where a single mother Madhuri Pradhan (Kulkarni) is living a carefree life. Her daughter Kavya (Sanhita Joshi) is her opposite. Madhuri is also friends with Kavya’s friends (Akshay Kelkar and Virajas Kulkarni). Her life takes a turn when Kavya’s professor (Sharad Kelkar) enters her life.

Kulkarni’s effort to get into the skin of a character she has never played before is quite noticeable.

Madhuri will be out in theatres on 30 November.
