Actor Akshay Kumar has been roped in to play the lead in the space film Mission Mangal. The film will be helmed by first-timer Jagan Shakti. It is a part of his three film partnership with Fox Star Studios.

“The first film to come off this partnership will be India’s first space film, Mission Mangal, which is in collaboration with R Balki and the film will be directed by Jagan Shakti. The shoot for Mission Mangal commences in mid November,” said an official statement by the makers.

Shakti has been as associate and assistant director in a number of well-known films like Cheeni Kum (2007), English Vinglish (2012), Thuppakki (2012), Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (2014), Shamitabh (2015), Akira (2016) and Padman (2018).

Akshay’s last collaboration with Fox Star Studios was Jolly LLB 2 (2017), which became a hit. “I am delighted to find a new creative partner in Fox Star Studios and am looking forward to creating a collaboration that will deliver a meaningful and entertaining cinematic experience. With our combined energies we hope to create content that not only excites but also empowers,” said the actor in an official statement.

Commenting on the association, Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star Studios, said, “With Jolly LLB 2, Fox Star Studios and Akshay Kumar delivered one of the biggest hits of 2017. It gives me great pleasure to take our association with Akshay further with this three film partnership with Cape Of Good Films.”

Meanwhile, it was announced last week that actor Shah Rukh Khan will play the lead role in astronaut Rakesh Sharma’s biopic Saare Jahaan Se Accha, which will be directed by Mahesh Mathai.
