Priyanka Chopra hosted a liveathon titled 'Social for Good' at Facebook's Mumbai office on Tuesday (27 November) discussing the perils and advantages of social media in the digital age, and how it could be put to better use to help people across the world. The actress hosted a number of prominent social activists, mental health professionals, as well as members from the film industry including Imtiaz Ali, Janhvi Kapoor, Soundarya Rajinikanth, Ishaan Khatter, Diljit Dosanjh, Armaan Malik and Ayushmann Khurrana.

Through a series of panel discussions the liveathon focussed on issues like mental health, women entrepreneurs, trolling and cyber bullying experienced by these prominent personalities.

One of the key portions of the talk was the discussion on trolling, which involved a revelation by Chopra that she faces abuse on a daily basis. The actress pointed out that cyber bullying is a social problem rather than a technological one.

Sharing her experience, Chopra said, "I posted a picture of myself with my dog, Diana, and I got comments like 'You ain't going nowhere with that dog in your hand 'You aren't even Indian anymore'." The actress went on to add, "I visited Jordan for a UNICEF field trip, and shared their heartwrenching stories which changed my life. I received comments like 'Dumb actress whose nation are you even proud of?' Even with a candid selfie, haters can say 'You look like an overcooked tomato'."

In another panel, Janhvi Kapoor revealed how her sister Anshula Kapoor was abused on Twitter for a silly joke on her recent Koffee With Karan appearance. Janhvi said, "You want to protect the people in your life. Like for example my sister actually just recently got trolled on social media. She did something silly on Koffee With Karan and started getting like rape threats and stuff. And it was just weird to me. As people are faceless on social media, they feel they can have opinions that sometimes cross a moral line. So, when I put stuff that’s personal up on social media, I do think of that too. I feel protective towards them... what people might say about them or about my equation with them. You tend to be guarded."

The incident, which Janhvi mentioned, took place in the episode where she was the guest alongside Arjun Kapoor. In one segment, Johar pit Janhvi and Arjun in a competition to call up a closed one and ask them to say 'Hey Karan, what's up?'. Just when Janhvi called up Anshula, Arjun screamed from behind ensuring that Anshula doesn't help the Dhadak (2018) actress.

While the sisters viewed this as a silly joke, it apparently did not go down well among trolls who issued vile rape threats against Anshula.

Janhvi also revealed that she had to self-censor her pictures off her social media profile before she acquired a more public profile. Probed further by Chopra, she admitted that one picture of her cuddling with friends was removed because someone commented that 'it looks like an orgy'.

Among the other guests, Richa Chadha also suggested that online bullying is often 'gendered'. She said, "I have started to self censor myself a lot. I think about if I want these slurs on my profile. With my aunt, my brothers following me. I do think bullying is very gendered."

During the discussion, Chopra admitted that she gets trolled on a variety of topics, from her dog to her dress. The actress emphasised that she only chooses to focus on the good comments, and ignores the trolls.
