Rajkumar Hirani seems to be sticking to his word of not glorifying Sanjay Dutt in the biopic.
Sanju trailer: Stripped of fame and diginity, but not the will to survive

After presenting an impressive teaser, director Rajkumar Hirani and the makers of Sanju have released an equally impressive trailer. At the teaser launch, Hirani had categorically stated that he would not glorify Sanjay Dutt in the film. Going by the trailer, Hirani has stuck to his word as it largely focuses on the two things that has haunted Sanjay — drug addiction and AK47.
Much has already been said about how Ranbir Kapoor has aced Sanjay's look, tone and body language. The verdict on his performance will out be once the film is released, however, it looks like Kapoor has worked hard on bringing out Sanjay's vulnerability.
The trailer begins with many honest confessions and one clarification — "I’m alcoholic, drug addict, womansier, but not a terrorist." During the many court hearings, Sanjay had always pleaded the judge that he should not be called a terrorist.
Though acquitted of terror charges, Sanjay was convicted for illegal possesion of guns under the Arms Act. The trailer also gives a glimpse of his travails in prison, beginning with the shot of a naked, portly Dutt (Kapoor) exposed in front of a policeman.
Dutt's personal life has been full of ups and down too. Sonam Kapoor, who appears to be playing Dutt's second wife Rhea Pillai, is too loud in her dialogue delivery.
Diya Mirza seems to be playing his current wife, Manyata.
While it is too early to comment on Paresh Rawal's act as Sunil Dutt, he doesn’t look like the late actor. Though Sanju is touted to be a film on the relationship between Sunil Dutt and Sanjay, the trailer does not reveal much.
Actress Manisha Koirala, who plays Sanjay's mother, actress Nargis Dutt, is only briefly seen in the trailer.
Actress Anushka Sharma looks like an experienced entertainment journalist and actor Vicky Kaushal looks promising as the Gujarati friend who Sanjay meets in the US.
The characters of Boman Irani and Jim Sarbh have not been introduced. Reports had earlier suggested Sarbh will play Salman Khan in the film, but his look in the trailer does not resemble Khan's.
While the teaser was more of a roller coaster ride, the trailer has slowed down the pace. Nevertheless, it still remains a film that fans are waiting for with bated breath.
Sanju will be released on 29 June.
