Srijit Mukherji's Uma premieres at New York Indian Film Festival

Srijit Mukherji’s Uma had its world premiere at the New York Indian Film Festival. This is Mukherji’s third film to be screened at the prestigious festival, after Autograph (2010) and Rajkahini (2015). The 18th edition of the festival was held from 7-12 May 2018.

Dr Anupam Ray, the consul general of India was present at the screening and later wrote about the film on his Twitter handle: “Uma by Srijit Mukherji premiered at New York Film Festival today. It is an inspired and inspiring film about hope and optimism. As Srijit himself said after the screening that only love can make things happen and transform out world. A film to watch and talk about!”

Mukherji, too, was overwhelmed to get poitive response for the film from a global audience. The screening was followed by a Q&A session, in which the director reportedly had a hard time explaining the concept of 'Akal Bodhan' (one of the rituals of Durga puja) to the mostly American audience.

Uma has also been recognised at the London Indian Film Festival (LIFF) 2018, India Film Festival of Alberta (IFFA) 2018, Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2018, Reelworld Film Festival Toronto 2018, Birmingham Indian Film Festival 2018 and Habitat Film Festival, New Delhi 2018.

The film traces the journey of a father striving hard to make his dying daughter's last wish, of watching a Durga puja, come true.
