Pyarelal Wadali of Wadali Brothers passes away at 75


The younger brother of Ustad Puran Chand Wadali, Pyarelal was admitted to the Fortis Escorts Hospital yesterday (8 March).

Ustad Pyarelal Wadali of the Wadali Brothers passed away in Amritsar today (9 March) due to cardiac arrest. He was 75. Pyarelal, younger brother of Ustad Puran Chand Wadali, was admitted to the Fortis Escorts Hospital yesterday (8 March).

The Wadali Brothers are a celebrated name in the sufi music genre. They are known for singing ghazals, gurbani, kaafians and bhajans and have carried on the philosophy preached by stalwarts like Kabir, Bulleh Shah, Amir Khusro and Surdas.

Their tryst with Hindi cinema began in 2003 with the ‘Darda’ song in Chandra Prakash Dwivedi’s Pinjar, starring Urmila Matondkar, Manoj Bajpayee, Sanjay Suri and Priyanshu Chatterjee.

The Wadali Brothers are also known for the song ‘Aye Rangrez Mere’ from Aanand L Rai’s Tanu Weds Manu (2011), starring Kangana Ranaut and R Madhavan.

They have also sung songs for films like Dhoop (2003), Mausam (2011) and Tamil flick Chikku Bukku (2010).

The brothers have been honoured with quite a few awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1992 and Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2003.
