Blackmail song 'Patola': Guru Randhawa recreates magic for Irrfan Khan film

Punjabi pop singer Guru Randhawa is becoming a sought-after singer-musician in Hindi cinema. He has recreated some of his popular Punjabi pop numbers for Hindi films, most notably the 'Ban Ja Tu Meri Rani' song in Tumhari Sulu (2017). Randhawa has now recreated the popular 'Patola' song for the Irrfan Khan-starrer Blackmail. Randhawa has crooned a couple of versions — a classical style version and a Punjabi, hip-hop one with Bohemia.
For Blackmail (2018), Randhawa has produced a nice mix of classic Punjabi beats and contemporary pop. It may be diffcult for non-Punjabi speaking audiences to relate to the words, but it is the lively music that one can enjoy the most. There is hardly any change in lyrics. Patola is Punjabi slang for a desirable woman. Randhawa is quite confident and energetic in his singing.
Director Abhinay Deo uses the track for the wedding of Dev (Irrfan Khan) and Reena (Kriti Kulhari). Reena, who's not a coy bride, ends up sleeping on the wedding night as Dev watches her.
The poor choreography is the only problem with the track. Punjabi music is such that it can pull anyone to the dance floor. This lively track deserved better choreography than Randhawa’s feeble steps. This, however, takes nothing from the music.
