Film trade analyst Komal Nahta wrote a blog detailing Kapoor's personal retelling of the events that took place before the actress's sudden demise on 24 February.
'On 24th morning, I spoke to her', Boney Kapoor opens up on Sridevi's death

Actress Sridevi's sudden demise on 24 February in Dubai led to a frenzy of conspiracy theories around the nature and cause of her death. While the family sought to recede within their home to find space to grieve, the internet launched into a very public examination of the event. A week after the funeral, Boney Kapoor opened up to film trade analyst Komal Nahta about the events that shocked fans of Indian cinema around the world.
Nahta wrote a detailed account of the retelling by Boney in his blog. In the blog, Nahta states that Sridevi had decided to stay back in Dubai to shop for her daughter, Jahnvi, following the wedding of actor Mohit Marwah in the UAE. Kapoor recounts that the actress was not used to staying alone while abroad, and it was only the second time in 24 years that she was doing so. It was with an intention of giving her a pleasant surprise that Boney decided to take a trip to the Jumeirah Emirates Tower hotel in Dubai (where the actress was staying) on 24 February.
Nahta quoted Boney saying, "On 24th morning, I spoke to her,” recalled an emotional Boney, “when she told me, ‘Papa (that’s how she addressed Boney), I’m missing you.’ I also told her that I was missing her a lot. But I didn’t tell her that I would be joining her in Dubai in the evening. Janhvi had seconded my idea of going to Dubai because she was scared, her mom, not used to being alone, would misplace her passport or some important document if she was alone."
Nahta suggested that this was not the first time Boney had surprised the actress in such a way. He quoted Boney recounting an incident during their courting days, when he, as producer, stayed up all night talking to her before landing up at the doorstep of her hotel where she was shooting alongside his brother Anil Kapoor for Mr. Bechara (1996).
Keeping with the style, Nahta said Boney decided to take the actress out on a dinner date. While Sridevi went to refresh herself, Boney decided to take a break. However, when the actress did not return after 15 minutes, Boney panicked. Nahta wrote, 'He then walked to the bedroom and knocked at the bathroom door and even called out to her. The unsuspecting husband, hearing the tap inside on, then called out “Jaan, Jaan” still louder but got no reply, which was unusual. He panicked and opened the door which had not been bolted from inside, nervous but yet not at all prepared for what he was going to see. The tub was full of water and Sridevi was immersed completely, from head to toe, inside the tub. Devastated, he reached out to her but watching her motionless, he feared the worst [sic]."
The actress passed away from 'accidental drowning' caused by unconsciousness. She was 54 years old. The 90th Academy Awards, which were held earlier today (IST), paid tribute to the actress.
Nahta ended his blog by saying, "The mystery will remain unsolved. But that was not of much relevance to her near and dear ones. What mattered the most was this: Sridevi, the vivacious, beautiful and talented heartthrob of millions, had become late Sridevi."
