The Maharashtra police on Thursday revealed that they had summoned actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, his lawyer, Rizwan Siddiqui in association with a call details record scam. According to PTI, the cops had arrested three private detectives in January for illegally obtaining and selling call detail records.
Eleven people, including India's first female detective, Rajani Pandit, have been apprehended in the case. The Indian Express quoted Thane police PRO, Sukhada Narkar, as saying "We had issued summons to Nawazuddin Siddiqui to appear before the investigating team and record his statement. The summon was issued almost a week ago, and he had assured us that he would come on March 9. However, he didn’t turn up today (Friday)."
According to reports, a summons was issued to Siddiqui and his lawyer, after an investigation indicated that the actor's lawyer had attempted to obtain call records of his wife illegally.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) was quoted by reports suggesting that the purpose of obtaining these records would be over a dispute between the couples. However, the authorities refused to confirm anything until Siddiqui makes a statement.
On 29 January, four detectives were arrested for illegally obtaining and selling call record details of various important people across the country. The police later siezed over 100 call detail records through further investigation, and are continuing the pursuit of the main racketeer of this inter-city racket across Pune, and Mumbai.
