Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom misses the third dimension in India


According to an industry insider, multiplex owners had a disagreement with Universal Pictures over their share of revenue from the sale of 3D glasses.

Superhero, sci-fi and fantasy films have a huge fan following all over the world. In India, big-ticket Hollywood films usually overpower domestic films.

The latest Hollywood big-budget fantasy, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, was released in India yesterday (7 June) and earned around Rs5.75 crore nett on its opening day, as reported by Boxofficeindia.com.

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was released on more than 2,300 screens in India, including its Hindi, Tamil and Telegu versions.

“While Avengers: Infinity War continues to set new benchmarks in India, the next keenly awaited Hollywood film, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, will hit the Indian screens on 8 June [sic] 2018, two weeks before its US release... 2300+ screens in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu," Adarsh tweeted.

The opening is decent but it is surprising to note that the film was not released in 3D in India.

An industry insider said the Indian multiplex owners had a disagreement with Universal Pictures, the film's global distributor, over their share of the revenue from the sale of 3D glasses.

“Universal Pictures was fighting with multiplex owners over 3D glasses. Universal Pictures wanted a 50% share in the revenue that multiplex owners charge customers. However, the multiplex owners refused to accept this proposal. So, the multiplex association collectively took a call to not release the film in 3D in India,” the source said.

We tried contacting officials at Universal Pictures but in vain.

According to BoxofficeIndia.com, the last film from the Jurassic series, Jurassic World (2015), was released in 3D and earned just over Rs90 crore nett in India.

With Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom being released only in the 2D format, there are chances that the film might not fare as well as the previous one, though it has hit the screens in India two weeks prior to its US release.
