Late actress Sridevi's daughter Janhvi Kapoor has had a good start to her career with her maiden film Dhadak (2018) bagging Rs33 crore nett in the opening weekend, as reported by Boxofficeindia.com.
Dhadak bagged Rs13.75 crore nett on Sunday, to take its opening weekend total to Rs33 crore nett. Made at an estimated budget of Rs40 crore, the film has been released in 2,200 screens in India.
Dhadak is the official remake of the 2016 Marathi blockbuster Sairat.
“We have a lot of gratitude. We are feeling extremely happy that the audience have accepted us. I’m just happy that people are watching the film, appreciating it and discussing it. That is all that you could have asked as a filmmaker. I’m also happy for both the kids. It’s a debut for Janhvi Kapoor but in a certain way it is also a debut for Ishaan Khatter. I’m glad that they are getting this kind of love for their debut film,” director Shashank Khaitan told Cinestaan.com.
The director was naturally delighted with the audience response to the film. Before the release, there were concerns whether what new the film could offer for those who have seen and loved Sairat (2016). Khaitan reckons it is the honesty of Dhadak that has clicked with audience.
“What’s clicked for us? I think it is just the honesty, the innocence. I don’t think we deliberately tried to be different from the Sairat. We just tried to make an honest adaptation,” said Khaitan.
In comparison to films from debutants over the last 5-6 years, Dhadak edged the likes of Student Of The Year (2012) that bagged Rs25.60 crore nett in is opening weekend. The latter had seen the launch of Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra. Student Of The Year (2012) was released in 1,350 screens.
Tiger Shroff’s maiden film and Kriti Sanon’s maiden Hindi film, Heropanti (2014) was released across 2,200 screens and it had bagged Rs20.86 crore nett in opening weekend.
