Actress Mouni Roy, who will make her film debut in Reema Kagti’s Gold (2018) with Akshay Kumar, has signed her third film in a row after Brahmastra (2019) and Romeo Akbar Walter (2019). She will be seen opposite Rajkummar Rao in Made In China. The pair will play a Gujarati couple in the film. Roy started her career on television with Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi in 2007.

The quirky comedy will be directed by Mikhil Musale who made his directorial debut with the Gujarati film Wrong Side Raju (2016). Dinesh Vijan will be producing the film set in Gujarat and China. Made In China is due to begin filming this September.

Rajkummar and Roy will play husband and wife in the film. Rajkummar is a struggling businessman who gets an opportunity to do business in China, while Roy is his wife, a Mumbai girl who relocates to Ahmedabad after marriage.

Producer Vijan told the daily tabloid, Mumbai Mirror, why he cast both artistes in their roles.

“We wanted someone who’d connect with the heartland and Mouni, a typical Indian beauty, has a huge fan following. She has a strong personality but gentle eyes and is a good dancer which is essential for the role as her character has a passion for classical Indian dance having learnt it. She has started working on her Gujarati dialect. Raj will start prep soon and the chameleon he is, I’m sure he’ll quickly get into character.”

Rajkummar and Vijan have already worked together before. Stree, directed by Amar Kaushik, is a horror comedy co-starring Shraddha Kapoor. The film is due to be released on 31 August.

This year, many Indian films from Secret Superstar (2017), Hindi Medium (2017), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017) have enjoyed successful runs in China. It makes sense then the next step for India would be to have films set in the Middle Kingdom, further adding appeal to the Chinese audience.
