Agnidev Chatterjee’s upcoming film Gaheen Hriday marks his seventh collaboration with actress Rituparna Sengupta.
The film is also significant for Sengupta as it is her third film based on the late author Suchitra Bhattacharya’s works. The two earlier films were Dahan (1997) and Alik Sukh (2013). The actress received a National award for Best Actress for her performance in Dahan.
Gaheen Hriday also features prominent theatre artistes Debshankar Halder and Kaushik Sen in important roles.
The film narrates the story of Sohini (Sengupta), who is unhappy in her marital life with Bhaskar (Halder).Sohini gets a new lease of life when Anupam (Sen) enters her life. She gets into a passionate relationship with him. But when she finally decides to walk out of her marriage, she learns that Bhaskar is diagnosed with cancer. Now, Sohini has to choose between her own happiness and supporting the ailing Bhaskar.
"I think one cannot really fathom the seriousness of a situation in which a woman decides to break off her marriage until one experiences it on a personal level," Sengupta said in an interview with the Bengali daily Anandabazar Patrika. "Suchitradi explored and presented it with a lot of clarity.”
The film has already generated a buzz with its explicit depiction of female sexuality. “Every director has a unique perspective and style," Sengupta reasoned, adding, "In all of Agni’s films, the physicality of the female protagonist plays a crucial role. Some directors tend to explore the psychology of the characters when it comes to relationships. However, Agni has a different take on it. I feel sexuality is a crucial part of a relationship, I cannot think of any reason not to consider it. Also, the sequences of physical intimacy have been shot aesthetically in black and white.”
Chatterjee also brushed aside talks of trying to sell the film on the back of Sengupta’s sex scenes. Speaking to the newspaper, he argued, “In this era when adult content is amply available on the internet, no one is going to come to watch the film solely for that reason. All I can say is that the character of Sohini is quite different and has a lot of layers. Despite being the heroine, she displays a lot of grey shades.”
Gaheen Hriday is scheduled to hit the screens on 20 July.
