Actor Salman Khan is known for his charitable deeds. Television actor Kavi Kumar Azad, who passed away recently, was among those Khan helped in times of need.

Kavi, who became popular as Dr Hathi in the television show, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, had worked with Khan in the film Kyon Ki... (2005). In 2008, Azad had to undergo bariatric surgery. Khan, Azad's producer Asit Kumarr Modi and his co-actors from the show helped foot the surgery and medical bills.

Confirming the news, Kavi's brother Ravi Kumar Azad said, "Yes, it’s a true that Salman Khan had helped bear the cost of Kavi’s surgery and medical bills in 2008. We will forever remain grateful to film. Words are not enough to sing praise of Khan. Kavi had worked with Salman Khan in Kyon Ki... He kept in touch with Kavi even after the surgery. My brother had met him again where he asked him how much weight he had lost. When Kavi said 70 kgs, Khan replied 'chalo, at least one Salman Khan is out of you'”.

Kavi was advised another surgery for further reducing his weight. But he refused to undergo one, fearing a negative impact on his acting career.

“Kavi was to have another surgery but if he had lost weight then it would affect his career. Also, Dr Hathi needs to look like Dr Hathi and not Salman Khan. The other big reason to refuse the second surgery was that he wasn’t comfortable with the idea of having to take medicines for the rest of his life,” added Ravi.

Ravi also revealed that save for being overweight, his brother had no other health issues.

"Kavi didn’t have diabetes or any health problem. He used to have the odd medicines when he didn’t feel well. I never thought he would leave us like this. That morning, he said he was feeling uneasy I and patted his back, offered to take him to the toilet, but he went on his own. He called the show scheduler to inform that he was not well and wouldn't report to work that day. He went back to bed, and so did I. Few hours later, we were shocked that he was no more. We don't have children, but he was like the child of the family. We miss him dearly."
