Director Shaad Ali’s Soorma is Taapsee Pannu’s first biopic. She plays the love interest of former India hockey star and captain Sandeep Singh, whose role is being essayed by Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh.

But if she ever does a sports film again, Pannu wants to play the central character. During an interview session for Soorma, the Pink (2016) actress said, “If I get a chance to do a sports biopic again, I will do it. But I hope I get to play the lead character.”

Asked which personality she would like to portray, she said, “Koi bhi chalegi yaar [Anyone will do] sports biopic (laughs). Whatever I get to learn in sports is good. I find Sania's life pretty interesting. Even Saina’s life is interesting. [But] her film is getting made; it’s made well, I hope. The firsts in all sports are always interesting.”

Hyderabad-born Sania Mirza was India's highest ranked woman tennis player. Hissar-born Saina Nehwal is an Olympic bronze medal-winning badminton star. Nehwal's biopic, tentatively titled Saina, is being directed by Amole Gupte and Shraddha Kapoor is playing the lead.

Pannu was into sports in her school days. But she wasn’t satisfied with playing just one sport. “Funnily I was not involved in any one particular sport," she said. "I have been a jack of all trades, master of none (laughs). But seriously, I have played volleyball, basketball, badminton and athletics. I am playing squash currently.”

Soorma is set to be released on 20 July.
