Actor and theatre personality Shrivallabh Vyas died in Jaipur on 7 January. He was 59 years old.

An alumnus of the National School of Drama (NSD), Vyas appeared in 60 films in a career spanning three decades. Some of his films include Sardari Begum (1996), Sarfarosh (1999), Abhay (2001), and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose: A Forgotten Hero (2005). He was a familiar face in regional cinema, television and theatre as well.

Vyas, however, is best remembered for his role in Ashutosh Gowariker's Oscar-nominated film Lagaan (2001). In the Aamir Khan-led film, Vyas played Ishwar, the kind medic who becomes a wicket-keeper for the rag-tag team taking on the Englishmen at their game.

He is also known for playing Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Sardar (1993), Ketan Mehta's biopic on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The actor suffered a paralytic stroke in 2008, which confined him to bed, and his family moved to Jaipur to take better care of him. Actors like Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar are said to have contributed to help the family during its financial struggle.

Vyas is survived by his wife, Shobha, and two daughters.
