Secret Superstar, starring Zaira Wasim, continued its dream run in China bagging $51.50 million (gross) [approximately Rs327.5 crore at the current exchange rate] after eight days, as reported by China box office portal, entgroup.cn.
The film, which actor Aamir Khan produced and acted in, grossed $4.83 million (approximately Rs30 crore) on its second Friday (26 January).
The Indian film lost the top spot on Friday to the Hollywood film Maze Runner: The Death Cure which bagged a gross of $8.20 million (approx Rs52.13crore) on its opening day. The Hollywood film, though, had more shows (78,415) as compared to Secret Superstar that was shown in 50,029 screens.
Like Dangal (2016), Secret Superstar, too, will look to bag Rs1,000 crore in China, but the latter will have to do better in the second weekend. Secret Superstar had made $27.21 million (Rs173 crore) in the first three days, but in the next five days, the film's business has slowed down with $24.4 million (approx Rs155.14 crore).
While eclipsing Dangal’s $193 million (Rs1,246 crore) might be a challenge, the Secret Superstar producers are laughing all the way to the bank as the film was made at a budget of only around Rs50 crore. This cost was recovered with a profit as the India collections alone stood at Rs62 crore nett, as reported by Boxofficeindia.com. A business of Rs300-crore plus in China is an added bonus.
The success of both Dangal and Secret Superstar underline the popularity of Khan in China. China began to warm up to Khan from the time 3 Idiots (2009) was released in the communist state,
