Veteran actor-producer Jeetendra (75) has been accused of sexual abuse by a cousin who lives in Himachal Pradesh.

The woman filed a complaint against the actor in Shimla, capital of Himachal Pradesh. According to a report on the website of Outlook magazine, the incident took place 47 years ago.

In her complaint, the woman said she was 18 at the time and Jeetendra, 28. Jeetendra took her to a shoot with her father's permission and then allegedly abused her.

The woman said she has chosen to speak out after all these years because she did not want her parents, now dead, to be affected. Also, she said she was afraid the actor, then a rising star in the Hindi film industry, would use his financial muscle and influence to suppress her.

She said she only mustered the courage to speak up now, inspired by the #MeToo campaign, where women across the world have spoken out about the horrors they have faced in professional and personal life.

In Hollywood, producer Harvey Weinstein was fired from the company he founded after several actresses spoke of having been sexually abused by him over the years.

Interestingly, the government is already considering a move to remove the statute of limitations to report such incidents, especially in the case of those who were abused as achildren.

The matter was brought to the fore by a Canadian scientist of Indian origin writing to Union woman and child development minister Maneka Gandhi after she found she could not report her uncle for having abused her as a child in Chennai over four decades ago.
