Actor and stand up comedian Vir Das has been conferred with an honorary doctorate by Knox College in Illinois, the institute he graduated from, for his achievements in performing arts.

He will also be speaking at the their annual commencement ceremony. Former US presidents Barrack Obama, Bill Clinton and actress Eva Longoria have addressed the institution in the past.

Speaking about his experience at the institute, Das said to the media, “Knox was this wonderful place that catered to kids like me who couldn't otherwise afford to study in the US. They had an amazing faculty that made me love performing. They took an economics student and turned him into an actor and comedian.”

“I am not sure if I even remotely deserving of this honour,” he added.

Das is also puzzled to be chosen to speak at the ceremony. “They have had speakers like Obama and Clinton and I am not sure what comparative wisdom I am going to have to offer. But I am gonna work hard to let the students know that there is a world of choices available to them if they just step out of their box. That's what Knox did for me. It's a cool full circle moment in life. And an honorary doctorate is fun. The wife is already calling me Honorary Dr Das,” he joked.
