On actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan’s 64th birthday last month, Lyca Productions officially announced Indian 2, a sequel to S Shankar’s blockbuster film Indian (1996), which had Haasan playing the dual role of father and son.

While the makers are yet to officially reveal more details about the project, reports suggest that actors Dulquer Salmaan and Simbu may have landed key roles in the highly anticipated film. It is also said actress Kajal Aggarwal will play the leading lady. On Sunday (2 December) at the pre-release event of her Telugu film Kavacham, she confirmed that she is indeed part of Indian 2.

Speaking on the occasion, Aggarwal said that her next film will be with Kamal Haasan and even though she didn’t reveal the name of the project, it’s safe to assume it will be Indian 2 as Haasan has no other projects in his kitty at the moment.

Meanwhile, the pre-production work on the film is already underway and Haasan is expected to shed weight for his character. He is believed to undergo strict weight loss program under the supervision of trainers from the US. The news about Indian 2 was first announced during the first season of Tamil Bigg Boss, which was hosted by Haasan.

According to reliable sources, the principal shooting is expected to begin from 14 December. Anirudh Ravichander has been roped in to compose music. To be made on a lavish budget, Lyca Productions took over the reins of the project from producer Dil Raju after he chose to opt out following unknown reasons. The film will be simultaneously made in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu.

There are also reports that Haasan might revive the character of Sabash Naidu, the spin-off based on the character Balram Naidu from Dasavatharam (2008). However, there’s still no official word.

The project went on the floors couple of years ago and the team even shot a schedule in the US. Following an unfortunate incident where Haasan fell from his office stairs and sprained his leg, the project was put on the back-burner.
