Halkaa trailer: Little Pichku dreams of his own toilet

This charming film introduces us to a boy who wants to better his life by acquiring his toilet.

Sonal Pandya

In Nila Madhab Panda's children's film, Halkaa, young Pichku is revealed to us as the 'hero' of this story. And his 'heroine'? The most unlikely candidate — a toilet!

As a saleman in a bathroom showroom tells him, "It is not a toilet, it is a door that opens to heaven." For Pichku, it is heaven. The young boy resides in the Delhi slums with his parents and has to use the train tracks in the morning to relieve himself or the filthy, stinking public toilets.

Pichku schemes and tries ways to use relieve himself privately and with his friend wants to purchase a toilet for his home. The trailer shows the conflicted relationship between Pichku and his father (Ranvir Shorey) and shows the difficulties he faces as he tries to get a toilet to his slums.

Panda's film highlight the persistent problem of open defecation in India. Unlike last years Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017), the protagonist is a young boy who doesn't have the means or methods to install a toilet in his house, just a grand ambition.

Halkaa stars Tathastu as Pichku along with Shorey, Paoli Dam and Kumud Mishra. Produced by Roshni Nadar Malhotra and co-produced by Akshay Kumar Parija and Eleeanora Images, the film is due to be released on 7 September. Helicopter Eela, starring Kajol will also be released on the same day.

It has already had its world premiere at the 21st Festival International du Film Pour Enfants de Montréal Film (FIFEM) this March and won the Grand Prix de Montreal at the festival.
