The ‘Kundali’ song from Anurag Kashyap’s upcoming film Manmarziyaan is a Punjabi sangeet number picturized on the film’s lead actress Taapsee Pannu. Reportedly, the filmmaker came up with an unusual idea for the choreography of the song.
Although it’s a Bhangra number, Kashyap brought in choreographers from south India, sisters Navadevi and Navalakshmi, to choreograph it. When Taapsee was told about this first, she brushed it off as a joke.
“I was pleasantly surprised when Anurag Kashyap told me he has gotten new girls from the south to choreograph the song. I almost didn’t believe him when he told me this first. I thought he was joking. Until one day I turned up at the rehearsal and realised he wasn’t,” she said in an official statement.
Explaining Kashyap’s reason behind the move, Taapsee added, “He wanted a new take on a sangeet number. Punjabi sangeet numbers are done to death in our films and he thought getting new choreographers who are not of the same background as the song and flavour of the film might just get in something refreshing which I feel it did. The song is beautiful and the peppy choreography these two girls added to it makes it fresh and exciting to watch.”
She also pointed out that it is the first time that the filmmaker will have a lip-sync dance song in his film . “It’s the first time Anurag has a proper lip sync dancing number in his film, so expect something unique for sure!” she said.
Navadevi and Navalakshmi are the daughters of the late stunt choreographer Rambo Rajkumar, who has worked in Hindi and south Indian films. The two sisters have choreographed a number of south Indian films and have worked with the likes of Rajanikanth and Kamal Haasan.
Also starring Abhishek Bachchan and Vicky Kaushal, Manmarziyaan is all set to be released on 7 September. The audio song has been already released and the video will be out on Friday (31 August).
