Anupam Kher, who is in New York filming for his upcoming American television show New Amsterdam, has been keeping himself busy.

Kher attended India Day in Michigan as the celebrity guest, hung out with singer Lenny Kravitz, and attended American acting legend Robert De Niro’s 75th birthday celebration.

Kher shared photographs from the exclusive birthday party on Twitter. He had acted with De Niro, as Dr Cliff Patel, in the Oscar-nominated film Silver Linings Playbook (2012), directed by David O Russell.

The trio bonded again at the party where another famous filmmaker and friend of De Niro, Martin Scorsese, was also in attendance.

The actor said meeting Scorsese and talking with him was like a lifetime's bonus. He gifted De Niro a copy of the Bhagavad Gita and an idol of the god Ganesh. Kher said he also recited the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra for De Niro. The mantra is supposed to confer long life.

Kher’s good friend, former filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, marvelled at how far the actor, who had played a 70-year-old pensioner in his debut film 34 years ago, has come.

Back in March, De Niro invited Kher home to celebrate his birthday at dinner, a moment Kher called “the biggest highlight of my entire life”. It’s safe to say the two actors have become good friends since.
