Box office: Gold collects Rs74.35 crore, Satyameva Jayate Rs53.85 crore in overall business


Reema Kagti's Gold managed to make around Rs3.75-4 crore nett on its first Monday (20 August), while Milap Zaveri's Satyameva Jayate made around Rs3.35 crore nett on the same day.

After a phenomenal opening day, Gold (2018) and Satyameva Jayate (2018), the two Independent Day releases, haven’t quite lived up to expectations. The neck and neck competition has affected the prospects of both films. Reema Kagti's Gold managed to make around Rs3.75-4 crore nett on its first Monday (20 August), while Milap Zaveri's Satyameva Jayate made around Rs3.35 crore nett on the same day.

Made at an estimated budget of Rs85 crore Akshay Kumar-starrer Gold was released across 3,000 screens in India. The film has so far made Rs74.35 crore nett in its India business.

Gold review: A satisfactory attempt at revisiting a glorious past

Gold collected Rs37.25 crore nett in the three-day period from 17 to 19 August. Its Friday (non-holiday) collection was Rs10 crore nett. The first Monday saw a drop of around 60% from the Friday collection.

Satyameva Jayate review: Worth raising this slogan once

Meanwhile, unlike Gold, John Abraham-starrer Satyameva Jayate is made at an estimated budget of Rs50 crore. Satyameva Jayate enjoyed a fairly wide release as it got around 2,500 screens. The film has so far collected Rs53.85 crore nett in its domestic business. It collected around Rs24.5 crore from 17 to 19 August. It earned Rs7.50 crore nett on Friday. Compared to Gold, the Monday collections of Satyameva Jayate dropped by over 50%.  

Satyameva Jayate becomes the second successive film with John in the lead to make over Rs50 crore nett at the domestic business. Earlier this year, Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran had made Rs64.81 crore nett in its India business.

The two films that were released on Independence Day, a holiday, last Wednesday, will look forward to another holiday tomorrow (22 August), on account of Bakri Eid.

Come Friday (24 August), two new Hindi films — Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi and Genius — will hit the screens. It would be interesting to see whether they affect the business of Gold and Satyameva Jayate.
