If Ranveer Singh is in the house, there’s bound be an electrifying atmosphere. As expected the actor was in his jovial spirits as he hobnobbed with the victorious members of India’s 1983 Word Cup team. The actor is set to play former Indian captain Kapil Dev in the upcoming biopic, '83. The film will be directed by Kabir Khan, and is co-produced by Phanton Films.
The film was announced at a gala event on Tuesday in the presence of several members of India's 1983 World Cup winning campaign. Apart from then captain Kapil Dev, Mohinder Amarnath, Kirti Azad, Roger Binny, SS Madanlal, Sandeep Patil, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Yashpal Sharma, Dilip Vengsarkar and Sunil Valson made an appearance at the event. Then manager of the team, Man Singh, was also present at the event.
While he might be playing one of his heroes, Dev, Singh was in no mood to curtail his enthusiastic nature. Early images coming in from the event, had Singh kissing Dev.
Before that, the actor broke into a jig with Srikkanth, who displayed just as keen a footwork as he did during his earlier days.
The film, currently titled '83, will be based on India's first triumph at the 1983 cricket world cup. The team, led by Kapil Dev, defied the odds to beat a legendary West Indies team to lift the trophy in England.
Speaking about the challenge of playing the role, Singh said, "I was born at the time when cricket was big time. When Kabir sahab had come to me and said that there will be a film on 1983, I was like finally. And when he was narrating it to me, I was like woooh. It is not a story just about cricket but a human story." The Bajirao Mastani (2015) star later added, "How am I going to do this? I am honoured that I will be a part of the biggest story."
While Singh is expected to play Kapil Dev, there is no news yet of who the other members of his team will be. Speaking at the event, Dev said, "1983 ki team handle karna wasn't easy, koshish karlo mushkil se milenge aise characters poori India mein." (It was not easy to handle the 1983 team. You won't find such characters anywhere in India today, if you try.)
Dev also said, "I might have done mistakes. Actually, mein thoda agricultural ground se tha so woh agriculture aa jata tha. Jab shuru kiya tha English mein khelte the and I didn't know how to speak. But we did enjoy. There are many stories that we can't tell. Ab toh 25 years ho gaye hai koi nai chodhenge ab toh." (I am from the agriculture background, so it seeped into my talk. When we started, we used to play in English, but didn't know how to speak. Now, it has been 25 years, we won't leave it.)
Singh will also be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming Padmavati, and Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boys.
