Debutant director Amit Masurkar’s Newton continued to be the dark horse at the box office even on its first Monday. The film easily outperformed Omung Kumar’s Bhoomi and Apoorva Lakhia’s Haseena Parkar.
The Rajkummar Rao-starrer made an impressive Rs6.90 crore over the weekend, despite being released only in around 500 screens across India. The film passed the Monday test too by making Rs1.40 crore, as per figures shared by BoxOfficeIndia.com.
Newton made Rs90 lakh on Friday, which was average considering the number of screens it has got. However, the film started picking up after positive word-of-mouth and reviews along with the news that it has been selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars. The film has got more screens since it picked up at the box office.
Bhoomi, which marks Sanjay Dutt’s comeback, managed to make only Rs90 lakh yesterday. Its grand total now stands at Rs7.61 crore approximately. Made at an estimated budget of Rs32 crore, the film has been released across 1,300 screens.
Shraddha Kapoor-starrer Haseena Parkar, which is the biopic of gangster Dawood Ibrahim's sister, has fared even worse. The film earned only Rs65 lakh yesterday, which takes it grand total to a paltry Rs4.87 crore. Haseena Parkar is made at an estimated budget of Rs19 crore, and the film was released across 1,100 screens.
