Based on martyr Udham Singh who killed Lieutenant O’Dwyer, the release date comes even as there is no word on who'll play the lead.

Shoojit Sircar has a couple of key projects in line, one titled October with Varun Dhawan, while the other is a biopic on the life of martyr Udham Singh. Trade analyst Komal Nahta announced on Facebook that the film will be released on 12 April, 2019.
Sardar Udham is the story of Indian martyr Udham Singh, who killed Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, Michael O’Dwyer, the man who supported the actions of General Harry Dyer in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
In 1940, Singh had travelled all the way to London to kill O’Dwyer as a measure of revenge against the massacre that killed around 2,000 innocent people on 13 April, 1919.
Interestingly, there is no official word on who will play the lead. There were murmurs of Sircar allegedly first approaching Shah Rukh Khan and then Ranbir Kapoor for the role, but the director has negated the news. When asked about the same at the music launch of Running Shaadi (2017), Shoojit merely said,”I don't know about this news."
