When Pahlaj Nihalani was sacked as the chief of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), he had claimed that Madhur Bhandarkar’s Indu Sarkar was one of the major reasons for his removal. He alleged that Smriti Irani, the Information and Broadcasting minister, urged him to pass the film without cuts, which he refused.

Now, Bhandarkar has reacted to the statement in an interview with BollywoodHungama.com. When Nihalani’s accusations were pointed out, he said, “I was very shocked when this statement came. He said because of Indu Sarkar I had to go. But I don’t think so.”

Indu Sarkar made a strong statement against the Emergency imposed by the then ruling Congress party in 1975. And since the current ruling party BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) is a staunch rival of Congress, it was speculated that the government wanted the film to pass.

While making the accusation against Irani, Nihalani had said in an interview last month, “Indu Sarkar was the main issue. And Smriti Irani is always an issue. She has shown her presence in whichever ministry she goes. She has dominated. And here I was completely in the media, so how much time will it take to throw me out?”

Nihalani also went on to say that he is a victim of Irani’s ego. “I think so because their ego wasn’t fulfilled. And she (Irani) wants to show her presence in the ministry. And who can be a bigger target than me in the I&B (Information and Broadcasting) ministry? So the reason for my removal is that I didn’t listen to her and did not clear Indu Sarkar without cuts. She is a powerful minister and she knows the industry more than me,” he said.
