Actor N Santhanam on Friday, 13 October, heaved a sigh of relief as the Madras High Court granted him anticipatory bail. Realtor Shanmugasundaram had lodged a complaint with the Valasaravakkam police that the actor had threatened and attacked him and his lawyer, Prem Anand.

The court, while granting the bail, said that the actor would have to sign at the Valasaravakkam Police Station everyday.

Sources in the know say that the problem started when Santhanam, who wanted to build a mall at Kunrathur, employed Shanmugasundaram and reportedly gave him a sum of Rs3 crore for the construction.

However, a delay in the construction led to a disagreement between the two parties. Their contract was annulled, but, according to sources, Santhanam was not returned the money. To sort the issue, the actor and his manager, Ramesh, went to meet the builder and his friend, Prem Anand, a lawyer. However, a fight broke out resulting in an exchange of blows.

The actor filed a complaint with the Valasaravakkam polic which was followed by a counter-complaint by Shanmugasundaram against Santhanam. The police registered the case against Santhanam under sections 294(b) [recites or utters any obscene words or songs near public place], 324 [voluntarily causing hurt] and 506(1) [punishment for criminal intimidation] IPC, while a case against Shanmugasundaram was filed under sections 294 (b) and 506(1).
