Priyanka Chopra, Amitabh Bachchan hail Mary Kom's golden achievement


The champion pugilist defeated North Korea's Hyang Mi Kim to win her fifth gold medal at the Asian Boxing Championship on Wednesday.

Ace Indian boxer Mary Kom proved the fury of her fists again by winning gold at the Asian Boxing Championships held in Vietnam on Wednesday, 8 November. This marks the five time World champion and Olympic bronze medallist's return to the top of boxing ranks.

The victory won Kom plaudits not only from the sporting community, but also the Hindi film fraternity. From Amitabh Bachchan to Priyanka Chopra, who is currently in New York, praises poured in for via Twitter.

Chopra who played Mary Kom in the eponymous 2014 biopic, wrote 'I’m so so proud of you!India’s Daughter!always a winner.' The actress won a National Award for her performance as the boxer, and has since built a close bond with her. 

Amitabh Bachchan hailed Kom with the title of 'Golden Gloves' saying, 'Mary Kom wins Asian Boxing Championships GOLD ...she has done it again !! what a CHAMPION !! GOLDEN GLOVES !!'

Anil Kapoor, another well known sports buff, praised Kom's sportsmanship calling her an 'inspiration'.

Shraddha Kapoor called Kom's achievement a motivation for herself. Incidentally, Shraddha is set to play another sportswoman, badminton ace Saina Nehwal, in an upcoming biopic.

Considering the frenzy of biopics in the Hindi film industry, it was no surprise that several stars who had echoed sporting achievements on screen took to Twitter to praise the boxer.

Farhan Akhtar, who played the athlete Milkha Singh in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013) wrote 'Congratulations to a true champion @MangteC on winning her 5th Gold medal at the #AsianBoxingChampionships .. super achievement.'

Akhtar's Lucknow Central co-star, Diana Penty tweeted her wishes as well.

The industry, that has a number of sports biopics in the pipeline, is quite thrilled at the achievement and increasing success of Indian sports on the global platform.
