Theeran Adhigaram Ondru (2017), featuring Karthi and Rakul Preet Singh in the lead, was released a week ago to a rousing reception from Tamil audiences.

The film, which is based on a real-life case, tells how a team of police officers from Tamil Nadu took it upon themselves to track and bring to justice a bunch of dreaded dacoits wanted in a number of brutal killings across seven states of the country.

The film has not only been doing roaring business in the state, but has also come in for widespread praise from critics.

Theeran Adhigaram Ondru review: Vinoth delivers a flawless film

However, the film has attracted the ire of some sections of the population.

Theeran Adhigaram Ondru has dacoits hailing from the North and belonging to a tribe whose main occupation, supposedly, is robbing and looting. As part of the drama, the ancestory of the dacoits is traced back to the Mughals and the British. The film uses the term 'kutra parambarai', which translates to 'criminal tribes', to address the group. This has not gone down well with some people.

Keeping their sentiments in mind, the team, including director H Vinoth, has tendered an unconditional apology for using the term and announced that in future, when the film is broadcast on television and the internet, the word and the scenes related to it will be removed.

In a statement to the media, the team said, "This film has been made on the basis of the different dacoities that took place in different states of the country. We have not showcased any particular tribe or community in a bad light in Theeran Adhigaram Ondru. No community has murder and looting as its ancestral professions. We have not showcased any community in such a fashion.

"However, as we feel that the sentiments of some might be hurt, we not only tender an apology on behalf of the Theeran Adhigaram Ondru team, but also express regret for the hurt it might have caused. We hereby announce that we are removing the word and the book scenes from the film's television version and the internet version."
