The film is Kangana Ranaut's third flop in a row after I Love New Year (2015) and Katti Batti (2015).

Vishal Bhardwaj’s latest offering, Rangoon has turned out to be a disaster at the box office. Starring Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, Rangoon earned only Rs19.25 crore in its first week, as per figures shared by BoxOfficeIndia.com. As the budget of the film is Rs70 crore, it is bound to face huge losses.
In fact, it has entered the list of biggest box office debacles of the last few years. Other films in the list are Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet (2015), Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Broken Horses (2015), Abhishek Kapoor’s Fitoor (2016), Shujaat Saudagar’s Rock On 2 (2016) and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya (2016).
Rangoon earned just over Rs5 crore on its opening day. Normally, a film is expected to earn more on Saturday and Sunday than its Friday collections. But Rangoon is a rare case where collections kept going down in the next two days. It earned Rs4.75 crore and Rs4.50 crore on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
The numbers saw a crash on Monday as the film could manage only Rs1.40 crore (corrected figure). From here on, the fate of Rangoon was sealed.
Ranaut has been considered one of the most successful actresses in mainstream Hindi cinema after Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015). But Rangoon is her third flop in a row after I Love New Year (2015) and Katti Batti (2015). I Love New Year was stuck for a long time after it went on floors in 2011.
