Actor Rajinikanth made it clear on Twitter that he will not be taking sides in the upcoming RK Nagar constituency by-election on 12 April.

The actor's announcement comes in the wake of the Election Commission's decision to freeze the AIADMK's symbol of two leaves. The commission has awarded a cap symbol to the Sasikala faction of the AIADMK and a streetlight to the faction led by former chief minister O Panneerselvam.

Though he has always stayed away from politics, Rajinikanth recently met music director, actor and director Gangai Amaran. Amaran is contesting the RK Nagar by-election as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate. Amaran joined the BJP in 2014.

Rajinikanth reportedly wished Amaran for the election and also offered wishes for his party. After the meeting, Gangai Amaran stated in an interview that this was just the 'trailer' and the 'picture' was yet to come. This gave rise to speculation that Rajinikanth would openly support the BJP.

However, the actor took to Twitter on Thursday to clarify his stand. He tweeted, "My support is for no one in the coming elections."

The election to the RK Nagar constituency is set to be held on 12 April. The by-election is being held to fill the vacancy caused by the death of chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
